A 125kHz RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) transceiver is a low-frequency device used to communicate with passive RFID tags, enabling non-contact identification and data retrieval. Operating in the 125kHz band, these transceivers are valued for their ability to penetrate non-metallic materials (such as wood, plastic, or fabric) and function reliably in environments with high levels of electromagnetic interference, making them suitable for a wide range of industrial, commercial, and access control applications.

The 125kHz frequency offers several advantages: it provides a read range of up to 1 meter (depending on tag size and antenna design), consumes minimal power, and is less affected by water or metal compared to higher-frequency RFID systems. Passive tags used with these transceivers do not require batteries; instead, they harvest energy from the electromagnetic field generated by the transceivers antenna, activating the tag to transmit its unique identifier (UID) back to the transceiver.

Common applications include access control systems (e.g., key fobs for buildings or parking garages), animal identification (implantable tags for pets or livestock), and inventory management in retail or logistics, where tags are attached to products or pallets for tracking. In industrial settings, 125kHz RFID transceivers are used to monitor tools, equipment, or work-in-progress items on factory floors, providing real-time visibility into production processes.

125kHz RFID transceivers typically feature serial interfaces (RS-232, RS-485) or USB connections for integration with computers or control systems. They are designed for easy deployment, with compact form factors that allow installation in handheld readers, fixed gateways, or embedded systems. While they offer slower data transfer rates than higher-frequency RFID (e.g., 13.56MHz or UHF), their reliability in challenging environments and low cost make them a practical choice for applications where long-range communication is not required but durability and simplicity are prioritized.
